In the early 1980’s, La Jolla, California surfer/shaper Rusty Preisendorfer was building boards for the majority of the top 15 surfers in the world. Names like Occy and Shaun Tomson sought out Rusty’s designs. It wasn’t until ’85 that Rusty decided it was time to have a go at it in apparel and the signature “R” was born.
T-shirts and hats followed surfboards, then trunks, then walkshorts and more. Today, the signature “R Dot” is one of the most powerful surfing insignias in the world. But despite its size, Rusty Apparel is a brand that remembers its humble, shaping bay beginnings – that we began because we never wanted to stop surfing.
Rusty is the newest brand represented by the La Jolla Group, a privately funded corporation formed in 1992. The La Jolla Group portfolio includes licenses for O’Neill Clothing, Lost Clothing and Metal Mulisha.
