Design for Humanity is Billabong's charitable initiative. It began as an opportunity for Billabong's marketing, art and design teams to come together and give back to a non-profit close to the heart of our industry. This year Design for Humanity features a swim fashion show, an art auction and a musical performance from MGMT. In the second part of the show we will travel to Puerto Rico with Billabong surfers Sanoe Lake and Alana Brennan to see firsthand the kind of work that Surfrider Foundation is responsible for.

Quiksilver Presents Clay Marzo: Just Add Water
East Coast Tour Begins Saturday August 9; West Coast Premiere Presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink and Super Surfboards to Be Held on September 7 in Orange County

Quiksilver is pleased to announce the release of "Clay Marzo: Just Add Water," an epic film that dives beneath the surface of one of the most gifted and creative surfers in the world, 19 year-old Clay Marzo. The film gives a never-before-seen look at Clay's mind-blowing skills in the water and the challenges he faces on land as a result of Asperger's Syndrome.

Like other kids growing up on the island of Maui, Clay lived in the waves. Clay's pure love of the ocean along with his natural talent allowed him to excel to new heights, pushing the limits again and again. A member of Quiksilver's elite Young Guns crew, his spontaneous, unpredictable and creative style has earned him three NSSA National surfing titles, a nomination for Maneuver of the Year at the 2007 SURFER Magazine Poll and Video Awards and video spots in the biggest surf movies of this decade. Three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons calls him, "hands down, the best 19 year-old surfer in the world," while eight-time world champ Kelly Slater goes even farther saying, "He knows things I don't know about surfing."

Sometimes a puzzle to those around him, Clay was only recently diagnosed with Asperger's. The realities of life as an elite pro surfer, the constant travel and media demands, are not easy for Clay, but he is bravely taking on his difficulties.

"When I first met Clay I noticed that his personality and demeanor completely transformed in the ocean - he literally came alive in the water," said the film's director, Jamie Tierney. "It was also clear that Clay was quite misunderstood in the surf world, and the mission of the film was to show the side that only those closest to him could see."

"This movie will inspire people to live in the moment and to always take the time to look a little deeper. People are amazing and you never know what is behind their eyes," said Strider Wasilewski, Quiksilver Surf Team Manager and the film's producer.

Quiksilver and Clay Marzo will be touring the east coast next week to surf the local spots and give audiences a first look at this incredible film. The tour will start in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 9, 2008 and will also include stops in North Carolina and New Jersey throughout August. All events are free and open to the public.

Quiksilver, along with ROCKSTAR Energy Drink and Super Surfboards, will be rolling out the red carpet to host the West Coast Premiere Party at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on September 7, 2008.

The film will be available in stores in October, and a portion of the proceeds will be given to Surfer's Healing, a foundation for Autism that seeks to enrich the lives of children with autism and the lives of their families by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing.

Lori Kisner Promoted to Senior VP; Roy Turner Named Show Director

After 21 years tenure at the industry's largest and longest-running trade show - including fourteen successful years as show director, Lori Kisner has been promoted to senior vice president of dmg world media's Business-to-Retailer division, reporting to Alan Steel, dmg world media executive vice president.

As senior vice president, Kisner will manage the new B2R portfolio which includes Surf Expo, the California Gift Show, San Francisco International Gift Fair, Seattle Gift Show, and Portland Gift Show. She will continue to work out of dmg world media's office in Atlanta.

In a related move, Roy Turner, Surf Expo's director of buyer relations, has been promoted to Surf Expo show director.

"Roy was named one of the industry's most influential people by Transworld Business and has deep and long-lasting business relationships with most of the manufacturers and retailers Surf Expo serves," says Kisner. "Few people in the industry have more longevity with Surf Expo. As a boardshop retailer for more than 25 years and then founder of the Board Retailers Association, he's been to the last 46 shows - which is actually two shows more than me. We're very excited to have him accept this new role."

ActionWatch Retail Panel Revenues Increase 1.3% in First Half of 2008 Compared to 2007

Revenues from sales of surf and/or skateboard products and brands for the first half of 2008 increased 1.3% compared to the first half of last year. This data was aggregated only from stores participating in the ActionWatch Retail Panel during both of these time periods, providing an apples-to-apples comparison. All major product categories tracked showed sales increases over last year with the exception of hardgoods.

Apparel sales were up just over 1% although men's/boys' apparel showed a stronger increase. However, women's/girls' apparel slipped more than 5% compared to last year, which tempered the overall apparel sales increase. The most redeeming product class within female apparel was dresses, which was up 33% over last year.

Footwear sales were up 6.2% with particularly strong sales increases in the male shoes class. Accessories also showed an increase of 6.2% with the sunglasses class performing very well, posting an increase of over 15%. Wetsuit sales also showed an increase while hardgoods (including surf and skateboard hardgoods) were down just over 9% compared to the first half of last year. Within hardgoods, skateboard hardgoods were actually up slightly while surf hardgoods were down significantly.

Who loves art shows? You do. That's right, and that's why you are going Friday August 8th to your friendly neighborhood surfshop, Infinity Surfboards. There will be art, free goods, live music and live people.

It's all going down at 7:30pm in Dana Point, CA!

Russ Pope and Infinity surfboards have teamed up for the common good of people, lobsters and waves. Russ has painted 5 Infinity surfboards that will be auctioned off. Profits will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation's "Save Trestles" campaign. Hoven will also be there with their latest sunglass collab with Russ. Every board will come with a fin, board sock and a pair of Hoven "Big Risky-Russ Pope" shades!!!

Russ will also have new works on display for sale along with his own line of goods, "Myrtle - stuff by Russ Pope". He will be there to sign goods, give high fives and say hello.
