Tampa, FL and Pacifica, CA - Longtime BMX footwear maker sees increase in MTB sales, family-run factory has added capacity for 10,000 shoes per month.
SCg Shoe Co. has been making bike shoes in small batches for over 15 years, as the very first BMX shoe company. With many other shoe manufacturers coming and going over the years, SCg remains steadfast. Steven Caro, owner/operator says the shoes main feature is "an outsole that is as durable as possible, with great grip". "Our soles are always both glued & stitched. It's not just a thin line pressed in the rubber to look cool... there is real heavy duty stitching that connects the premium suede or leather, to the bottom of the shoe 100% of the way around". Caro has a collection of photos showing shoes that have easily lasted more than a year.
The first in a new line of shoes in development since 2014, 'The Sound' model features radical clean lines, while providing enough tech inside to keep riders coming back. "The Sound is our most popular shoe, for sure, but the Mid is what has attracted the most MTB attention" says Caro. 'The Mid' features more protection and support around the ankle, while keeping the same hard toe box, molded insole, and durable custom rubber outsole of The Sound.
"Starting last year, we experienced an uptick with MTB riders wanting something that was both durable and affordable" says owner Steven Caro, who grew up riding everything; moto, surf, skate, mountain bikes and bmx. "We realized there was a need out there, and that many riders were not happy with their current shoes around 3 main areas: durability, style and price." says Andrew Burke, head of MTB development. "We thought, 'Well, our shoes already address those concerns!'." SCg shoe models are available now and priced from $69.95 up to $89.95 USD. We immediately started asking for more feedback from our MTB testers, and have been developing new features with MTB in mind."
Both shoe models have since been put through their paces at Santa Cruz's famous UCSC trails, Pacifica, as well as Stafford Lake bike park. "The guys have even ridden some DH runs like Livewire and Gypsy at Northstar in Tahoe" says Burke. "These shoes are just comfortable right out of the box, for all around funtimes on a bike... be that dirt jumping, trails or all-mountain riding. They aren't necessarily made for DH, but that hasn't stopped some of our testers."
Steven understands the unique position his company is now in, "The thing that sets us apart the most has to be that we're rider-owned, and always have been". This has kept SCg Shoe Co small for a long time. "We co-own our factory, which is in Colombia, and that allows us to both keep costs down and also have a more family-like relationship. What more can you really ask for?" With this advantage, SCg can do rapid prototypes, as well as expeditious improvements, one-offs and collaborations. Steven concludes, "We're happy we can offer high-quality at an affordable price. We've learned a ton since those early days, and our current products show that for sure".

About SCg Shoe Co.
Prompted by his skate shoes continually falling apart, cycling expert Steven Caro created the first rider-owned shoe company in BMX, established in 1999. By 2002, team rider Bruce Crisman won X-Games gold wearing SCg shoes. More shoe models and riders were added to the roster, and emphasis continued to be placed on keeping the company "100% rider owned and operated". In 2008 manufacturing moved from Asia to Colombia, SA, leading to better quality control and the eventual growth in sales. Shoes are available direct from the website: https://www.SCgShoeCo.com , at select bike shops, and online retailers.
