Overview of role:

The primary focus of the Materials Developer is to understand the seasonal product direction, assist in collaboratively shaping the focused, seasonal toolbox, source, develop and qualify new fabrics.

Coordination of the materials process is performed by:

1. Sourcing the optimal material and supplier per the request of the product line managers and designers.
2. Meeting calendar deadlines to ensure that material developments and production are "delivered" on time for each season.
3. Performing and recording necessary lab testing to ensure materials meet PEARL iZUMi specifications.
4. Performing Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) analysis at multiple points during each design season.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Develop and source new material concepts and samples based on direction from internal stakeholders.
• Evaluate fabric sustainability score based on detailed fabric specification.
• Evaluate fabric costing based on detailed fabric specification.
• Preform Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) analysis based on seasonal needs and recommend develop a strategy to minimize impact for fabrics that do not meet MOQ.
• Establish a good working relationship with all fabric mills.
• Evaluate partners with sourcing and operations team.
• Research new partners for improved materials and pricing.
• Perform in house testing and monitor 3rd party testing for all necessary material developments. Confirm testing meets PEARL iZUMi’s standards.
• Maintain a physical and electronic record of material developments and testing data per season so that information is readily available when fabric goes into production.
• Maintain accurate and up to date information in fabric database (PLM and TEXbase).
• Maintain and organize fabric resource library for apparel use.
• Review and maintain seasonal lab dips.
• Ensure all new developments are commercially available for prototype garment making prior to sales sample production.
• Understand apparel calendar and integrate key fabric deadlines to meet fabric buy cycles.
• Responsible to meet calendar dates and delivery deadlines for prototypes, swatches, sales samples, photo shoot samples, size runs.
• Involved in early assessment of color combinations to meet fabric color minimum buys and avoid surcharges.
• Finalize fabric details, prices, surcharges, lead times and order/color minimums, to meet calendar deadlines.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with Product Line Managers, Designers, Materials Development, Quality Assurance, and Supply Chain Management in order to ensure performance.
• Assist in managing and resolving quality issues when fabrics do not meet specification
• Actively research textile industry trade journals, seminars, and trade shows to be informed of emerging technologies, fibers, yarns, materials and methods.
• Attend trade shows and gather information and swatches to present to creative teams.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned.


Job Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in textiles, product design, fashion design or related field.
• Two years’ experience in textile design or engineering.
• Knowledge and understanding of material construction and all aspects of textiles including, development, yarns, weaving, knitting, dyeing, finishing, special treatments, and technologies.
• Evaluate fabric sustainability score based on detailed fabric specification.
• Evaluate fabric costing based on detailed fabric specification.
• Knowledge of PC applications: Microsoft Office.
• Ability to network and utilize internal and external resources.
• Ability to travel to tradeshows and fabric mills.
• Ability to match color based on lab dips vs color standards.
