Job Title: Material Development ManagerReports to: Head of Material DevelopmentLocation: Ventura, CA

General SummaryThe Material Development Manager leads a team responsible for delivering core and seasonal material developments across all product categories. They will maintain healthy cross-functional relationships and build relationships with key stakeholders outside of the Materials R&D team both internally and externally. This role is critical to the success of Patagonia’s mission statement, creating and implementing material solutions and strategies to their category to help us save our home planet.

What You’ll Do
Collaborate with Business Unit Directors, Designers, Product Developers, Production and SER teams to develop material strategies for their categories that meet environmental, functional, design, quality, delivery and price targets.
Maintain a clear understanding of business needs, company goals, and material department strategy to help prioritize teamwork.
Partner with Advanced R&D team to help pull innovations through the supply chain.
Work with existing supply chain to strategically balance sourcing options based on capabilities, geography, price, capacity.
Be the voice of materials, drive functional discussions and initiatives across departments
Collaborate with Material Development Leadership on strategy and goal creation for the greater material development team.
Maintain a team structure that facilitates and maximizes individual and team performance.
Create opportunities for staff development, make hiring decisions, and drive performance management, recognition and rewards.
Help maintain process excellence across material development team.
Responsible for the oversight of a specifically assigned Raw Materials category which may change from time to time.

Experience You Bring
8+ years of synthetic and woven outdoor material development and management.
5+ years of experience leading a team.
Superior textile apparel materials experience with detailed understanding of all phases of product design and development including textile lab work.
Excellent understanding of outdoor apparel, accessories and equipment design and development process from initial vision through to final execution.
Comprehensive knowledge of technical materials including fibers, yarns, knit and woven textile constructions.
Advanced understanding of textile manufacturing and finishing, including dying, coating, lamination and finishing.
Working knowledge of personal computers with experience in the use of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook.
