Design Director, Apparel – Outdoor & Outerwear
The Design Director will be the senior design leader tasked with creating innovative performance apparel for the Outdoor category and for our many category based Outerwear needs. This will include design, technical development and management. A vital part of this role will be to collaborate with other senior design leadership in other categories and act as a strategic partner in developing and instituting creative inspiration and direction for each season – setting trend in our growing categories. Another important responsibility of this role will be to establish a design aesthetic that is authentic to Under Armour (athletic/sport) in the Outdoor and Outerwear space. To stay fresh, this role will lead the team on inspiration, trend and market research travel domestically and/or internationally.
Responsibilities included the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Build, inspire and mentor a strong and unique team of designers focused on creating innovative, brand-right, trend-right and fresh product across all Outdoor Performance and Outerwear end-uses.
Manage calendar adherence as this team works closely with Tech Design on the realization of product - refine and sharpen this model.
Manage budget for Outdoor Performance Design, including headcount, travel, and samples.
Analyze competitive landscape and user segmentation to develop a strong product roadmap.
Interact cross functionally with senior leadership in PLM, Merchandising, Footwear, Sourcing, Tech Design, Brand Marketing and other internal teams.
Come to the table with a strong point of view on creative issues while still having an open ear to opinions and suggestions.
Travel domestically and internationally to drive prototype delivery in addition to collection of inspiration, trend and market research
Visionary leader – what is new, innovative and different that will set the bar
High communicator and strong relationship builder – able to manage key partnerships in multiple locations
Experience driving big initiatives across the finish line – detail oriented
Ability to pitch big ideas and build consensus across teams
Background in innovative performance product design
BA or BFA in Apparel Design
10+ years of Design experience required, preferably in the sports industry
5+ years of management experience required
Prior experience working for a global company with a strong brand and distinct culture
Strong knowledge of Outdoor and Outerwear performance apparel and a great understanding/connection with the consumer
Refined & strategic taste level; ability to discern which brand extensions will hold up over time and protect the long-term value of the brand
A strategic leader who can think long- term and across the enterprise showing strong business awareness, critical analysis, integration of information, and the ability to develop an action- oriented plan
An authentic leader and partner; ability to lead by forming productive cross-functional relationships, showing respect for what the team has accomplished while bringing break-through thinking and solutions to improve the performance of the business
Must be able to prioritize tasks and work under pressure to successfully meet multiple deadlines
Obsessive attention to detail at every level of product design, presentation, and specification package creation
Must be 100% up to date and proficient in professional graphic design programs, i.e., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop on Mac platforms
Strong understanding of garment construction and textiles knowledge, including price points and merchandising needs
A continued understanding of the market as it relates to graphics and prints in performance sports and fashion
Creator of design solutions that meet consumer needs and also reflect our overall brand message and aesthetic
