Job Description

Ultimate Direction is the market leader of products designed by adventure racing athletes for athletes. In 1985, we invented the entire category of hydration packs. 30 years later UD remains a market leader, having created and popularized the "vest" concept for carrying water.

The role of Product Manager/Designer will drive strategy and innovations that lead to Ultimate Direction new product lines and performance in gross sales and margin revenues. This role leads the multifaceted demands of the UD design and development process and manages the on-time delivery and profitability of hydration assortments.

Ultimate Direction considers product management and design as a seamless process. The Product Manager will lead future product direction, create and manage line plans, creatively solve design challenges and drive innovative concepts throughout the development process, stay on calendar and meet financial metrics. This is an “A-Z” role covering everything from initial research and strategic direction thru final development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Calendar Management:
• Market Research – Identify opportunities in a highly competitive marketplace and determine strategies for Ultimate Direction to lead the market.
• Line Planning - Key contributor in defining opportunity, determining forward strategy and aligning Ultimate Direction with the brand identity.
• Coordinate - Contract Design Resources, Exxel Shanghai Office (Asian Merchandising and Sourcing office), Sales and Marketing Teams and manufacturing vendors, to plan and execute product lines.
• Create – Requires ground breaking product design utilizing personal skills, contract or Asia based design resources, aligned with Ultimate Direction design principles. These principles will directly coincide with overall brand strategy.
• Build – Product Briefs/Tech Packs and execute design, development and sourcing throughout supply chain.
• Manage - Development calendar and oversee all material, trims, lab dips to ensure on time delivery of sales samples and production on a rolling fast-track calendar.
• Ensure - prototype turns and other development tasks are on schedule and meet the deadlines outlined on the seasonal calendar.
• Contribute – Assist with Go-To-Market strategies creation and ensure assortment plan aligns with chosen strategy.
• Be Profitable – lead factory price negotiation process to meet brand retail strategies and margin/profitability desires.

Execution of Seasonal, and Fast Track Assortment Plans:
• Develop product briefs based off agreed upon strategies.
• Manage and guide Exxel Shanghai personnel plus a team of contract resources (as needed) to execute seasonal plans.
• Guide the development of products within the FOB and margin targets as outlined by the product briefs.
• Ensure the accurate creation of proto sample tech packs and product specifications as outlined in the product briefs.
• Oversee the timely and up-to-date revisions to product tech packs
• Oversee, review, and lead the communication of initial tech packs and specification corrections to factories and vendors.
• Direct fit sessions and guide developers on pattern corrections to achieve preproduction prototypes and sales samples
• Work with inventory planning to coordinate fabric and trim minimums, following bulk production timelines.
• Follow FOB targets and work with the sales team to maintain the projected profit margins for each season.

Coordination and Management Related Tasks:
• Manage fabric testing specifications and records for each category. Assure compliance to seasonal fabric testing requirements.
• Manage an accurate storage and communication system for BOMs, Tech Packs and critical product information. All systems should work for internal Exxel communications and for external distribution to foreign manufacturers.
• Supervise the lab dip process and ensure timelines are met.
• Study and share with the broader development team innovative materials and manufacturing technology developments.
• Participate in related technology and outdoor educational opportunities.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

• 7+ years of experience in product management and design.
• BA with product development related or design training, or equivalent professional trade school education.
• Proven commercial success in bringing equipment to market.
• Excellent strategic analysis skills.
• Excellent creative skills.
• Good knowledge of outdoor equipment and competitive adventure racing brands and their end use.
• Strong computer skills and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; including Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign. Knowledge of Alias, Solid Works, or Rhino desirable.
• Some domestic and overseas travel required.
• Basic knowledge in the complexities of coatings, finishes, manufacturing processes, and applications of textiles, foams, composites, and metals.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

• Overall strategic skill and innovative thinker. Possesses the ability to assess and identify what defines the future of hydration packs.
• Must have the design communication skills (sketches, renderings, illustrations) to create an effective development package, which can be sent overseas to begin prototype initiation and kick-off of the product development cycle.
• Strong ability to communicate and present product concepts, prototypes and samples to interdisciplinary teams.
• Must work well under pressure in a diverse group environment.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook programs.
• Must be a self-starter and implement processes and systems both domestically and overseas.

• Strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills: detail-oriented and capable of tracking and working within deadlines.
• Exemplary interpersonal skills are needed with demonstrated success in both written and verbal communication.
