Job Description

The successful Director of Stores leads and manages the operations of prAna’s 7 retail stores across multiple states and markets, working closely with the Store Managers and Carlsbad teams to relentlessly focus on our customer, ensure operational excellence, and increase in-store volume, profit and margins. The position drives the development and execution of retail operations practices/procedures, retail team performance and merchandise flow to achieve profitable sales growth and superior customer experience. As leader of retail operations, the Director of Stores is expected to spend approximately 70% of his/her time in the stores to be engaged with employees, customers, and the community.

This position interacts with a diverse group of employees at all levels of the organization and serves as a key point person for all the day-to-day retail decisions and communications. Self-direction and independent judgment are required to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified workload. This role coordinates the cross-functional retail support team in Carlsbad with a focus on achieving seasonal objectives, effective communication between the stores and Carlsbad, creating a consistent shopping experience with ecommerce, and advocating for superior customer service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Customer Experience - Execute customer focused service, sales and marketing/brand awareness programs and initiatives for the retail channel in order to contribute to sales growth.

a) Customer Service:
- Develop and implement prAna customer service and sales framework, standards and training
- Relentlessly communicate, model and reinforce extraordinary customer focus and service

b) Marketing and Branding:
- Ensure the creation, updating and communication of the retail marketing calendar in conjunction with the DTC and MAP calendar; ensure all parties are kept informed of consumer promotions/events in all channels
- Develop and monitor the retail marketing budget; manage and report on retail marketing budget real time
- Distribute to and interpret results for retail stakeholder to inform future strategies.
- Work closely with VP of Marketing and Store Managers to align marketing initiatives with individual store sales goals and company-wide marketing messaging, as well as appeal to the local target customer
- Ensure Store Managers to assess and implement local community outreach programs to maximize local community relationships, support sales goals and increase brand awareness
- Ensure store hours, staff schedules and employee expertise meet the needs of customers

2. Employee Experience

a) Team Leadership:
- Lead and manage Store Managers across 7 stores in multiple states and markets
- Develop, motivate and retain high performing employees; build and retain high performing teams
- Ensure that Store Managers have the required skills to independently manage each of their stores financially and operationally
- Communicate, model and reinforce company values, customer service standards, and store operations standards, policies and procedures
- Foster positive employee experience and teamwork within and across retail store teams and prAna headquarters
- Ensure establishment of annual goals for retail stores and Store Managers
- Conduct performance and pay reviews for Store Managers; facilitate performance management process with HR across stores
- Establish and maintain respectful, positive, productive and service-oriented relationships with Store Managers and team members; operate in the spirit of selfless service (SEVA)
- Handle all escalated operational field issues and provide resolution and feedback to field leadership regarding best practices, challenges and opportunities weekly
- Resolve employee matters, concerns and issues fairly and timely, utilizing HR or other functional areas where appropriate
- Manage in accordance with all company practices, policies and applicable federal, state and/or local laws

b) Staffing and Scheduling:
- Oversee and ensure that stores are effectively staffed with quality employees
- Monitor schedules and schedule building to ensure consistency with tools, management practices and budget on a weekly basis
- Approve job requisitions, promotions, compensation or other job changes for retail employees in conjunction with VP and HR
- Interview, hire, onboard, coach, counsel, discipline and terminate employees in conjunction with HR; directly responsible for interviewing and selection of Store Managers in conjunction with Carlsbad leadership
- Review and approve store and employee schedules

c) Training and Development, Management Practices:
- Partner with HR on onboarding and training opportunities, and information related to staffing, hiring and other people and culture needs across retail (e.g. Product, Customer Service, Merchandising, etc.)
- Ensure store teams are effectively trained on Retail Operations policies, procedures and standards
- Assemble, update and maintain retail specific handbooks or materials in conjunction with VP Human Resources

d) Communication and Collaboration:
- Serve as primary communication conduit among retail, Carlsbad office and departments; collect, filter and disseminate information to appropriate people in a timely manner
- Ensure excellent communication between the Store Managers and Carlsbad teams to ensure an exceptional, seamless brand and shopping experience and effective work partnerships to service the customer
- Help manage and communicate visits to stores by Carlsbad team members (and vice versa) to optimize the value and timing of visits; maintain and update master travel calendar for visitors
- Plan and manage retail management meetings/events in Carlsbad, collaborating with relevant people

3. Operations:
- Manage Store Managers and teams in their monitoring and analyzing of business trends
- Communicate inventory level and assortment needs to Planning and Merchandising to ensure sell-through potential is maximized
- Audit store compliance with stock room, cash wrap and other operational standards monthly, quarterly and annually
- Work with Visual and Merchandising Teams on floor set planning and execution
- Facilitate and distribute notes from weekly store management calls and weekly Carlsbad retail team meetings
- Proactively manage and implement retail specific programs, initiatives, projects, processes or other information

4. Inventory Control/Loss Prevention and Safety:
- Proactively lead and oversee loss prevention efforts and awareness
- Ensure Store Managers adhere to policies and procedures related to operation of the Point of Sale system to record accurate transactions
- Oversee regular inventory counts; monitor and assist with monthly cycle counts
- Monitor safe LP practices ensuring all stores are following company policy; conduct monthly random audits
- Ensure effective inventory management (e.g. receiving, transfers, shipping, tagging, inventory adjustments, RTVs, damages/defects); review quarterly with leadership teams
- Serves as emergency point of contact for retail teams’ safety; oversees safe work practices in accordance with company policies and practices

5. Financial Performance, Budgets and Business Planning:
- Ensure the distribution of accurate and timely performance reports; daily, weekly, quarterly (QBR) and annually
- In conjunction with CFO and VP, develop retail budget and forecasts
- Develop and support strategic and seasonal with sound financial analysis and understanding
- Achieve budgeted sales, margin and profitability goals for retail division as a whole and individual stores
- Develop and implement strategies to grow sales and minimize expenses
- Identify and implement operational efficiencies (both)

Job Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing or relevant field strongly preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of 5 years of in-store retail apparel management experience with full P&L responsibility
- Minimum of 1 year of experience leading and managing multiple stores as an Area or District Manager; and managing remote teams
- High level of expertise in retail leadership and operations, including hands-on development and execution of operational programs, standards, practices and procedures
- Understanding of consumer behavior and how to develop relevant retail marketing efforts to drive sales
- Creative and conceptual thinking to identify retail marketing solutions to drive traffic
- Full P&L experience required; experience with managing and tracking budgets and expenses
- Experience hiring and managing others

Technical Skills and Experience:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong written skills

- Analytical and budgeting skills
- SharePoint preferred

Travel and Schedule Requirements:
- Ability to travel 30-50% of the time to prAna U.S. locations
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including holidays, weekends and overnights
