Your Job:

As the Manager, Chemical Engineering, you will be responsible for creating and managing the execution of the strategies for our inline compounds and chemicals. You will lead the sourcing chemical engineering team and drive the work that supports our sustainability, performance, and productivity goals. You will have a solid understanding of the materials and processes that are used in footwear, including midsole and outsole compounds; paints, inks, and similar chemicals used in embellishments; and primers, cements, and similar chemicals used in final shoe assembly. Communication and collaboration skills are needed to work with vendors and factory partners to identify and develop solutions that reduce our carbon footprint, energy consumption, and labor needs while maintaining the fit, feel, ride, and quality of Brooks footwear.

This role reports to the Senior Manager of Commercialization and Industrial Engineering.

Your Responsibilities:

· Define, lead and implement the strategy for compounds and chemicals used in the production of Brooks footwear.

· Plan and manage all aspects of sourcing Chemical Engineering activities in Asia.

· Act as the technical expert to advise the Innovation, Development and Commercialization teams on the usage of chemicals and compounds for development, commercialization, and production to achieve design intentions, meet production quality and minimize product risk.

· Manage (including goal setting, performance review, hiring decisions, team culture, etc.) and support the career development of direct reports to ensure job satisfaction, retention and to identify and develop bench strength.

· Lead and oversee programs to support improved productivity, sustainability, and material performance as they apply to chemical engineering.

· Build strong relationship with various levels of leadership across both Brooks and factories. Implement strategies and process improvements within Brooks footwear manufacturing partners to advance goals in productivity and sustainability

· Work with Innovation, development, and production teams to identify, evaluate and transition new chemical technologies and processes into production.

· Lead the establishment of Brooks Best Practices in chemical engineering, aligning processes among the development, commercialization, engineering, Lean, factory, and vendor teams

· Facilitate change by influencing people and organizations in a matrixed environment.

· Influence Tier 1 and Tier 2 factory partners to review and refine manufacturing processes to assure efficiency, productivity, quality, and cost from a chemical perspective

· Evaluate factory efforts to comply with and support sustainability and productivity efforts; , report findings to Footwear and Corporate Responsibility and identify opportunities for and solutions for improvement.

· Collaborate with Development, Commercialization, Production and QA Teams to ensure product and process objectives are aligned Continuously evaluate any improvements to processes.

· Influence factories to staff and support projects.

· Leads the Chemical Engineering team in researching, documenting, and substantiating chemical and component improvements to quantify benefits

· Lead and influence functional and operational managers to improve productivity, quality, and output

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related science or equivalent experience

· 7 years+ footwear manufacturing experience, preferably as a manufacturing manager, engineer, or technician

· Prior footwear manufacturing experience and knowledge preferred

· 3+ years experience leading and managing a team

· Establish a team strategy and plan the work necessary to reach goals

· Must be able to manage Tier 1, 2, and 3 vendors and monitor projects

· Understand material and sustainability trends in footwear

· Must be fluent in English (writing and speaking) and able to communicate clearly with Brooks Asia and USA based teams.

· Good knowledge in bottom unit compound processing and testing.

· Good knowledge in shoe adhesive, bonding, printing, and coating processes.

· Expert knowledge of test methods and protocols used in materials, components and finished shoe testing.

· Understanding and application of Designed Experiments, root cause analysis, and Lean manufacturing.

· Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

· Passionate participation in Brooks’ sports activities a plus, ability to understand and empathize with the runner in order to develop loyal, engaging relationships with our customers and the Brooks community.

· Travel up to 10% (domestic / international)
