Job description: Mechanical Design and Product Development Engineer
Primary responsibilities:
- Take 2D artwork and convert it into a 3D CAD Surface and Solid models of various components and complete assemblies of helmets for motorcycle, bicycle and various other sporting helmets from inception to production
- Take an idea from a few sketches and refine it into a functional product in 3D CAD
- Engineer and design mechanical mechanisms, joints, pivots and track systems and various other part attachment methods
- Fabrication of prototypes for evaluation
- Understanding and use of 3D printing
- Understanding and use of 3D scanning systems
- Able to learn and use new engineering software as may be needed
- Evaluate product design with computer FEA, empirical lab testing and general engineering skills
- Plan, schedule and track the engineering project and their progress through the development cycle
- Coordinate with vendors/factories all functional steps to the product development life cycle and establish milestones and timelines and identify critical or problematic areas of the project development cycle
- Provide company management periodic updates of each project’s timeline status and any problem areas
- Manage document control of engineering project: Engineering CAD drawings, Design drawings, Project books, binders to include complete definition or design brief of each project, its documentation and specifications with Engineering support and management of product manuals and technical documents
- Coordination of samples from the vendors/factory of any needed product for the development of the projects
- Travel to factories for periodic visits and project management, (International travel required)
- Assist in sourcing and vetting potential new manufacturing partners/factories
- Helmet testing and data analysis as required
- Understanding and use of MATlab and LabVIEW are a plus
- Collaborate on revolutionary new product designs, development, and existing product enhancements with 6D staff
- Find creative solutions to engineering and manufacturing challenges while working within various helmet categories
