ABOUT THE JOB:

Actively build a deep knowledge of Backcountry’s root data sources, how the data is created, and how the data is ultimately used
Evaluate opportunities to acquire new streams of data, by building raw data pipelines into our data lake, and then exploring that data for potential value
Continually improve existing data by defining entity relationships / data models to improve accuracy, usability, and security of data
Work closely with business data consumers/creators to understand their data needs, and translate those needs to data solutions. Data Scientists will be on a “pod” including 1-2 Data Engineers. Together each pod will build these data solutions. The Data Scientist will orchestrate the pod’s work, writing agile stories and running daily standups, and maintaining visibility to prioritization and backlog for stakeholders
Help business users understand data, helping them build reports, new metrics, and ideate new ways for data to inform business success
Design and run tests, with the ability to identify the correct test methodology and evaluation techniques
Build and evaluate machine learning models when machine learning is an applicable solution to business problems. This process should include conducting and citing academic research, experimenting with models, and productionizing the model, continually evaluating for ethical bias and evolving model over time
Continually invest in your own knowledge and skillset through training, reading, and attending conferences and meetups.

ABOUT YOU:

Advanced SQL skills, preferably P-SQL
Intermediate Python skills
Experience thoroughly documenting work – Github experience preferred
Continual improver – you are constantly growing by looking within yourself and your skills to understand how to offer more to the world and your profession, and then actively working to realize that needed growth
Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree or PhD preferred in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Analytics, or similar
Open to critical feedback – you will have your work scrutinized and you will be expected to use the feedback to improve your work
Passionate about the outdoors
