This job contributes to REI’s success by leading and growing REI’s regional outdoor experiences. The Co-op Regional Experiences Manager reports to the Outdoor Programs and Experiences Manager, Field Operations. The Regional Experiences Manager is based in the field and responsible for defining the regional experiences business strategy and driving business growth for the experiences portfolio inclusive of Do-It-Yourself (DIY), Workshops, Day and Overnight Programs, and Activity Sites. This role oversees program operations, coordinates and leads regional teams, implements corporate initiatives, and serves as the main point of contact for program risk management at the regional level. The Regional Manager will partner with Retail Directors and Local Brand Engagement Managers to develop REI’s local and regional customer approach and strategy – aligned with business goals and objectives.

Leading the Way

• Leads strategic business development, planning and execution in collaboration with key partners
• Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the organization promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.
• Supports the implementation of company programs, procedures, methods and practices to promote REI key messages.
• Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results.
• Ensures employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.
• Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions.
• Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews.
• Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to employees in order to achieve department, company and customer results.
• Establishes and maintains visibility within the department.
• Monitors operational statistics, reports trends, variances and issues, and takes appropriate action.
• Collaborates effectively with leaders both internally and externally.

Planning & Navigating

• Manages a regional team to ensure quality program, event and service project delivery and budget goals.
• Manages all aspects of budgeting and program planning (assortment, schedule, pricing) for the region.
• Builds regional experiences participation and business through active partnership with the community.
• Provides oversight of the operational requirements of community partnerships and permits
• Reviews and negotiates terms of relationships and ensures compliance with contracts, permits, sponsorships, and agreements, etc.
• Manages compliance and resolves issues related to outdoor program risk management.
• Manages program expansion in alignment with company expansion.
• Collaborates with store management teams and retail leadership to ensure programs are promoted through retail stores
• Serves as regional oversight for Multi-Day experiences.
• Ensures operational consistency with other regional and national programs.
• Collaborates with local brand engagement teams to define experiences marketing plan and collaborate with business critical community partnerships.
• Align with other Regional Managers, to ensure consistency in quality and experiences delivery.

Bring your passion and expertise

• Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills. Proven ability to communicate effectively in team and virtual environments, to build and foster effective working relationships within REI and with multiple business partners
• Experience managing contract negotiations, in particular with land agencies and community organizations
• Experience managing budgets over $300,000. Proven and successful experience in building and managing annual plans, budgeting, execution, and evaluation.
• Working knowledge of legal, regulatory, and risk management issued related to outdoor recreation.
• Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification (within first three months of hire)
• BA degree in business management, or outdoor recreation management (or equivalent experience)
• Proven ability to build and cultivate relationships within the community preferred
• Ability to acquire a CDL and/or drive a 15 passenger van and loaded trailer – valid driver’s license
• Ability to effectively create program assortments which will maximize outdoor participation, revenue generation, gross margin, and net margin for a given region
• Experience managing a virtual and/or distributed team over a large geographic region
• Ability to travel regionally
