This role is primarily accountable for supporting story production—on message and on deadline—for the Co-op Journal, REI’s editorial publication, and Expert Advice, the co-op’s in-depth learning library of gear and skills content.
Responsibilities will vary depending on current editorial needs and will be tailored to the candidate’s strengths and interests. Potential duties may include:
Pitching, researching, reporting and writing stories
Proofreading or editing stories
Supporting digital content production and editorial operations
Attending weekly editorial meetings
Fact-checking stories
Assisting with gear testing operations
Writing social copy to promote editorial content
The ideal candidate is expected to have an interest in and the ability to balance news, human-interest stories and enterprise features, while challenging the way the outdoor industry has traditionally been covered and represented. You will exhibit sound news judgment that ensures key people, places, events and topics don’t go unnoticed and are covered accurately, fairly and with integrity. You pay attention to best practices in the media and creative industries and are amped for the opportunity to bring your point-of-view to REI. You love spending time outdoors, whether that’s in your neighborhood or in the mountains, and want other people to love it, too.
Bring your passion and expertise
Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing or related disciplines, or equivalent work experience.????????
Demonstrated experience developing and writing editorial content.
Ability to create, curate and occasionally edit information to meet content needs.
Familiarity with AP style, news judgement and journalism ethics.
Preferred experience working with editors to identify, inform and shape editorial coverage.
Preferred familiarity with web publishing tools, such as WordPress.
Understanding of content in service of SEO strategy.
Preferred knowledge of visual asset libraries and image licensing standards; hands-on experience making photo selects for high-visibility content.
Able to execute effectively by using resources efficiently, meeting deadlines and keeping others informed of work plans and progress toward goals. ? ?
Build rapport with all kinds of people inside and outside the organization.
Challenge the status quo, champion change and influence others to take action.
