This job contributes to REI’s success by being accountable for complex accounting, reporting, ad-hoc analyses and audit activities to ensure the accurate and timely reporting of financial results for internal and external purposes. General responsibilities include: Developing and maintaining accounting policies to ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards by performing technical accounting research and determining appropriate accounting treatment, proactively monitoring changes in accounting guidance and participating in cross-divisional accounting projects. Organization, attention to detail, and communication are critical to the success of this role. The ideal candidate will initiate, develop, and implement process improvements as well as model and act in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.

! Prepares monthly and annual financial statements, financial reports, and ad-hoc analyses as requested
! Creates, maintains and communicates monthly, quarterly and annual calendars to ensure adequate planning and successful deadline compliance for the following processes: financial close, BOD package, press release, etc.
! Monitors rulemaking activity of the FASB and analyze recently issued accounting standards for accounting policy and financial statement disclosure impact
! Solid understanding of internal controls related to accounting and reporting. Responsible for ensuring adequate internal controls within accounting and works with other teams to ensure adequate controls exist for processes that impact accounting
! Proactively identifies inefficient processes; initiates, develops, and implement process improvements
! Researches, analyzes, and creates and/or edits policy and procedure documents according to the Company’s standards, including formal policies and procedures and departmental operating procedures
! Takes a proactive role in reviewing and concluding on accounting policy impact of complex and non-routine transactions and agreements
! Creates and maintains a database of accounting conclusions ('white papers') to enable research and drives consistency across the company
! Assists in maintaining the Company’s policy document repository and addresses user questions about the repository
! Works closely with accounting personnel and cross-functional teams to implement new accounting standards, providing clarification of terms to users
! Resolves complex accounting issues and financial transactions identified/proposed by finance personnel and cross-divisional teams
! Demonstrates excellent time management skills and effectively prioritizes competing responsibilities with minimal oversight; ensures deliverables are completed timely
! Acts as liaison to external auditors in the resolution of technical accounting issues
! Analyzes and reconciles complex Balance Sheet accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies
! Accountable for reconciling and posting complex accounting transactions
! Trains, coaches and provides guidance to the Accounting team relating to more complex accounting processes and reconciliations
! Participates in and drives ad hoc projects and assignments as needed

Bring your passion and expertise

! Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
! CPA preferred
! 3+ years accounting and/or financial reporting experience
! SAP experience preferred
! Experience analyzing data in an ERP system
! Advanced Excel and analytical skills required
! Demonstrates firm understanding of how to apply GAAP to General Ledger accounting and the ability to coach and provide guidance to other accounting staff on more complex accounting principles
! Experience performing accounting research and determining appropriate accounting treatment
! Analytical mindset with drive for problem solving
! Ability to maintain confidentiality surrounding sensitive employee or company information
! Actively participates and collaborates with others to achieve business goals
! Flexible in one's viewpoints and positions to support the direction taken by others at REI
