This job contributes to REI’s success by providing legal services to the co-op and its officers, employees, and internal stakeholders in the areas of retail leasing and general real estate. Reports to the Deputy General Counsel – Business, Brand & Digital. Models and acts in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.

! Provide general legal counsel and risk management guidance on company-related matters that involve any aspect of real property assets
! Draft, review and negotiate commercial retail leases and related documents, real property acquisitions and dispositions and related documents, development agreements, construction contracts, SNDAs, estoppels, etc
! Build relationships with and primarily support the Real Estate team in all real estate-related matters
! Manage and oversee the work of outside counsel
! Manage and oversee the work of Real Estate Legal Specialists on the Legal Team Coordinate with a variety of real estate services providers, including outside real estate counsel, real estate brokers, developers, title companies, surveyors, environmental firms, etc
! Monitor the changing legal issues and legal environment affecting the co-op in the areas of retail leasing and real property law to support the co-op’s compliance with applicable regulations and laws at the federal, state, and local levels
! Build and maintain expertise in real estate matters
! Act in alignment with and model REI’s core values and mission
! 5+ years of business law and real property law experience, with multiple years of focused experience as a lawyer actively handling and negotiating retail leases and related legal documents for a national branded retailer
! Significant experience with a variety of real estate transactions, including acquisitions/dispositions, due diligence for property acquisitions, review of title and survey documents and environmental reports, etc
! JD degree from an accredited law school with a national reputation; US state bar membership in good standing
! Highly responsive and service-oriented attitude
! Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with multiple deadlines
! Ability to maintain strong working relationships with cross-divisional partners
! Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated ability to create useful business documents and presentations in plain English
! Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn about and support multiple areas of the business
! Active and effective team player and collaborator with internal business clients and within own department, including excellent people skills and the ability to build and maintain positive, supportive working relationships
! Experience counseling and training businesspeople with little or no legal background
! Mature judgment and demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior leaders Appreciation for and support of REI’s co-op structure, culture, and values
! Ability to think strategically and provide critical analysis and risk assessments
! Champion for the organization and advocate for solutions in the co-op’s overall best interest

Bring your passion and expertise

! J.D. degree from an accredited law school with a national reputation
! Membership in good standing in at least one state bar in the U.S
! 5+ years of real property law experience, including focused experience with retail store leasing, and experience with a variety of real estate transactions (acquisitions, dispositions, etc.)
! Experience in a retail or branded services company with stores or field operations
! Experience managing outside counsel Builds capacity of individuals and teams through effective employee development, involvement, communication, and supervision efforts
