Launched in 1994, VICE operates in 35 cities across the globe, making 1500 pieces of content every day with a focus on five lines of business: VICE Digital, an award-winning international network of digital content; VICE STUDIOS, a feature film and television production studio; VICELAND, an Emmy-winning international television network; a Peabody award-winning NEWS division; and VIRTUE, a global, full-service creative agency with 26 offices around the world.

Motherboard prioritizes stories that help our readers understand how technological developments, tech companies, and tech policies impact specific people and communities and how they shape power structures and the day-to-day lives of people.

Motherboard is looking for an energetic, motivated deputy editor to work on the VICE.com Tech desk. The right person has a reporting and editing background with a track record in writing and editing impactful pieces that lead national conversations in science, technology, and/or video games. The deputy editor should be confident working with complex and sensitive subject matter, and should be able to connect trends in science and technology with those in politics and the news cycle.

You will work closely with the Tech desk's Editorial Director, Managing Editor, and senior editors to shape coverage of the section, and will work with staff writers and freelancers to publish vital stories every day. You will serve as a senior leader across the newsroom and will motivate your team to produce their best work. You will think strategically and creatively about packaging and formats, always looking for the most interesting way to tell a story, and seek opportunities to collaborate with the social, video, and events teams.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overseeing editors and writers (staff and freelance) in conceiving and sharpening pitches and executing a strong daily mix of stories

Editing and top-editing quick hits and longer pieces

Guiding editors on packaging and formatting decisions

Recruiting and working with a diverse stable of talented writers

Collaborating across the social, video, and events teams to help design ideal packaging for pieces

QUALIFICATIONS:

At least 5 years of editing experience in one or more of the above beats

A quick metabolism for generating conversation-starting stories

Proven experience delivering a mix of reported scoops, features, and quick hits that set themselves apart from the rest of our competitors

A clear idea of the themes that matter and how to approach them

An aversion to clichés and boring writing
