The Director, Global Engineering has the unique opportunity to help shape the future of our global business. Support the Senior VP Global Distribution and senior staff in the development and execution of Global Distribution strategic plans and budgets, by region/site and across our 3PL partners. This role is based at our Portland, OR facility and reports to the Senior Vice President of Global Distribution

RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the DC Engineering Department which includes exempt professionals, direct labor, and supervisors. Current oversight includes the Rivergate and 4-Star staffs, as well as support capacity for the Cambrai France and London Ontario DCs. Hire, develop and motivate staff. Create supportive, team-oriented work climate that enables professional enrichment.

Assess company performance in critical areas and direct efforts to improve global distribution agility and costs.

Coordinate internal/external project teams, including commercial/operational/technical resources to deliver solutions. Support tactical and strategic goals by developing cross-functional teams that align members of partner business units (such as FP&A, Planning, Retail and E-Comm, Logistics, Operations, Account Operations, and other relevant teams supporting company initiatives). Clearly understand potential technical, cost, risk, and business impacts of multiple projects on each other and on our business. Incorporate this understanding into recommendations to senior management, work teams, and executives.

Utilize technical expertise and resources to review and analyze automated material handling automation and distribution center robotics and recommend changes and improvements that increase productivity and contribute to cost efficiency and operational excellence.

Develop and submit budgets for all areas of responsibility, including cost justifications and ROIs for capital equipment. Select and maintain relationships with vendors (including 3PLs) and third-party consultants as needed for equipment and services.


REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION
Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering or Supply Chain disciplines with Mechanical/Electrical working knowledge and/or Information Services preferred. Advanced degree preferred, but not in lieu of practical experience.

EXPERIENCE
Minimum 10 years experience managing automated distribution center operations
Minimum 7 years of managing and supporting teams in highly functioning, high volume DC operations
Minimum 7 years of continuous improvement methodologies to achieve efficiency, quality, and safety
Minimum 5 years of project and program management experience
Minimum 5 years of apparel and footwear distribution experience

Use technical skills to analyze costs and performance related to all aspects of production operations, and to make recommendations for improvements.

Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with management, staff, and vendors.

Use tact, sound judgment, and discretion in all contacts. Identify/evaluate problem areas and implement effective solutions.

Use technical knowledge in material handling processes and equipment.

Read, write, and speak English; Make effective oral presentations before groups of varying sizes using excellent written and verbal communications skills.


LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY
The Global Director of Engineering role includes supervision of managers and supervisors, engineers, and hourly labor within the department, located throughout global distribution operations.

JOB CONDITIONS
Job may require hours that often exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week to complete priority projects.
Exposure to Distribution Center machinery/equipment such as sorters, conveyor belts, fork-lifts and loading docks.
Job pressure exists in the balancing of a variety of projects with conflicting deadlines, and managing personal time, and that of others. Work is performed in a warehouse and office environment. Must be physically able to sit for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, kneel, and operate computer hardware/software. Ability and availability to travel by plane domestically and internationally (but not expected to exceed 25%).
