By 686 Founder, SIA Board Member and USC Professor, Michael Akira West
A lot can be learned through listening to peoples’ stories of success. It’s almost never a straight line, always has challenges, success comes, and the core lessons are transferable from one pursuit to another. The series In My Eyes will demonstrate that by showcasing the stories of people who are in very different professions with very different roads to success. This 5 part series brings you the stories of Selema Masekela of Alphanumeric, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, Iva Pawling of Richer Poorer, Jeff Kearl of Pelion Ventures, Amanda Chinchelli of Seea.
The idea and project is brought to you by Mike West, one of the longest lasting and most successful entrepreneurs to come from the snowboard industry. Tenacious is an understatement for Mike’s own pursuit of entrepreneurship. In 1992 he founded 686 during undergraduate business school and went on to consistently push and evolve the company to one that’s known for using the highest quality materials (not at all easy to do) and engage in groundbreaking brand collaborations with some of the world’s most well known brands. It’s almost 30 years later after starting the brand and you will still find Mike going overseas visiting factories, checking production, and incessantly thinking about how to do it better and what’s next.
Mike is one to pass on lessons and information to the next generation which led him to teaching an entrepreneurship class at USC. He invited some of his successful entrepreneur friends to share their stories and that’s how the series In My Eyes was born. It’s a free source for you to learn from and be inspired by. We’ll feature each episode over the next 5 weeks.
