October 5, 2020 (Brooklyn, New York) – Today, Josh Katz, world renowned photographer, digital creator and sponsored skateboarder, announced the release of New York in Quarantine: Rooftop Culture Through Crisis. With 100% profits of the photo book benefiting Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) in the fight against COVID-19, the photo book captures the hope, beauty and eccentricity of quarantined New Yorkers adapting their art, relationships and lives to play out stories above the city’s empty streets. ire escapes are the urban backyard and a defining architectural feature of NYC. If you’re lucky enough to have one, it’s probably your only private (but not secluded) outdoor space. While space is limited, New Yorkers make them work as dining rooms, reading nooks, art studios, and even drag show runways.
“When NYC emerged as the U.S. epicenter for the pandemic, New Yorkers settled in for a lengthy quarantine and reinvented roof-centric lifestyles full of community, chaos, and social distancing,” stated Josh Katz. “With New York in Quarantine, my goal is to document how New Yorkers persevered through this difficult moment in history, all while benefiting and supporting Doctors Without Borders.”
For the next 30 days, Katz will be launching a 30-day Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 to fund the first print run. For a $25 contribution, backers can preorder New York in Quarantine and additional reward tiers ranging from posters, postcards, and prints to sharing a candle-lit meal with Katz on the rooftop where this project came to fruition. For $6000, Katz offers to hire an advertising airplane with an aerial banner message (of the donor’s choosing!) to fly over New York City. He will then photograph the airplane over the skyline and feature it in the book.
