Billabong Raises the Sea Level for Surf Camps
Irvine, CA – May 4, 2005 – Billabong-USA is partnering with Surfrider, the nation’s leading organization on beach preservation, and Surfline, the leading provider of surf report and forecast information, to offer school-aged kids an unparalleled surf camp experience. 
 
Billabong Camps, a major initiative for Billabong USA, will set itself apart from traditional surf camps by working with their partners to offer a comprehensive curriculum covering: ocean science, water safety, surf culture and surf etiquette.  Surfers will have the opportunity to learn first hand about ocean science topics such as: waves, tides, marine biology, coastal ecology and beach profiles, as well as how to operate safely in the surf zone while riding waves. Throw in a little surf history, respect for the beach and environmental awareness, and you have a unique program for first time surfers and beach-goers, or experienced surfers who just want to improve their skills

Billabong will debut its program June 2005 in 18 beach communities coast to coast, plus two in Hawaii and one in Canada.  To operate these camps Billabong has selected local operators in each community based on their high standards of instructional integrity, history, excellent reputations and continued commitment to youth programming. 
 
Billabong has struck a great balance with their surf camps”, said Jonno Wells, CEO of Surfline. “Sean Collins and his forecasting team have been bringing surf science to students for years.  Surfline is committed to helping educate the next generation, so getting involved through the camps is a natural fit.”
 
Each week, campers can expect to spend their days in small peer groups that are age and skill appropriate.  This enables them to develop skills at their own rate, building confidence and proficiency and at each level.  In addition, professional counselors and a low staff to student ratio of one to four ensures safety and allows for individual instruction.
