ASR/SIMA Board Builders’ Pavilion Announced

At ASR January, new area to highlight the surf hard goods market

San Juan Capistrano, CA (October 18, 2006) – At the heart of the surf industry is board building and the individuals who shape, create and innovate products to further surfing. In order to provide additional exposure to this segment of the market, ASR and SIMA have created a special area at ASR dedicated to the surf hard goods market. The ASR/SIMA Board Builders’ Pavilion will debut January 25-27th at ASR in San Diego.

“Surfing is a lifestyle sport, but at the very root of it is the shaper and brands innovating board building,” says Andy Tompkins, ASR Show Director. “For years we’ve looked for a way to make ASR accessible to more of the smaller surf hard goods producers. By teaming up with SIMA on the Board Builders’ Pavilion, we have found a way that benefits builders, retailers and the industry as a whole.”

The Pavilion will be centrally located on the ASR January show floor in order to make it convenient for busy retailers and media to stop in.  An open, community setting much like the successful ASR GoldBox Mission, will open up an area for ASR attendees to learn more about the board building market and network in a relaxed environment. The goal is to increase retail attention and knowledge of this vital and creative segment of the surf industry.

“In light of the events of December 2005, the SIMA Board Builders’ Special Interest Group has been working hard to spotlight board builders, as well as educate and share information on new materials being used,” said Bill Bahne, chairman of SIMA's Board Builders Special Interest Group. “The ASR/SIMA Board Builders Pavilion is one way of doing just that.”

The Pavilion will help to bring attention to the core of the industry – surfboards – and help board builders bring their products to market. Smaller board builders including, foam and epoxy companies, shapers and surfboard accessory brands, will have the chance to exhibit at the show in a cost-effective and dynamic way. ASR and SIMA hope that the gathering of board builders in a centralized location will help answer retailer and industry surf hard goods questions following last winter’s closing of Clark Foam.
