Surf Expo Ready to Kick off the ’07 Trade Show Season

January 26, 2007 - By now you’re used to hearing about Surf Expo breaking attendance records, growing, attracting new brands, etc. But they’ve done it again. This January’s show yielded 8% more buyers shopping over 200 new exhibitors, 965 total representing 6,684 Lines across over 130,000 square of exhibit space at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. With a completely new layout dissected by a huge amenities area offering everything from corn dogs and funnel cakes to swimsuit models and a sushi bar, exhibitors and buyers alike were abuzz.
Surf Expo Show Director and dmg Vice President Lori Kisner was thrilled with the turnout and rave reviews of the big changes, including the shift to a 4-day format.

The second LAUNCH class was a huge success, with 100% of our winners writing orders. The buyers, taking jury of top retailers’ lead moved in rather quickly on the new products: Switchflops’ Lindsay Phillips wrote two orders the first hour of the show!

The Resort and Souvenir sections of the show were abuzz from start to finish. January is a busy show for these more seasonal vendors, and with the growth in what will be the “Boutique” section next fall, exhibitors were overloaded and writing furiously even after the lights dimmed at 2PM on Sunday. Tim Russo, owner of Spicy clothing, exhibited their new brand for the first time: “On Saturday I wrote orders till I had blisters on my fingers, literally!  We are already planning for the fall show and are excited to make a BIG impact for the boutique section of the show.”

Over at the 5-0 (Skate), Team Pain’s crew outdid themselves again growing the mini-ramp into a monster with a larger, more challenging layout. The ever-escalating buzz about Surf Expo’s 5-0 section had skaters booking impromptu flights to fly in all weekend. Everyone from Team Plan B’s Danny Way and Ryan Scheckler to Omar Hassan and Chet Childress were on hand for a reunion of three generations of skateboarders, ranging from 6 year-old Sophie Leodhle at the first Surf Expo All Girl Skate Jam to legends like Rodney Mullen and Bruce Walker for the Skate Hall of Fame Florida Inductions.

Surf was as strong as ever. Florida boys appropriately swept the O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro in the days proceeding the show. CJ Hobgood, Gabe Kling, Shea Lopez and Asher Nolan were presented their awards onstage Saturday afternoon. Reef hosted its first ever Board Build-Off Florida style, raising over $10,000 for the Board Retailers Association and local board shops everywhere in the US. Shapers were on hand for their annual Surf Expo demo. Paper was rustling as buyers were meeting legends, pros and manufacturers face-to-face. Todd Roberts, owner of ZJ Boarding House in Santa Monica explains, “Our stoke and new inspiration for our surfboard section of the shop came from having face to face sit downs with the industries best shapers and fin engineers. That doesn't happen anywhere else.... ever! Surf Expo is an amazing, never-ending source.”

The evolution of Surf Expo to serve both the resort and boardsports universes is moving along quite smoothly. The fourth day yielded tons more orders for most manufacturers who were eager to work through the eleventh Surf Expo hour. The next Surf Expo will be September 14-16, 2007.
