Life Rolls On Hosts Inaugural They Will Ski Again Event at Mammoth Mountain

CULVER CITY, Calif. - February 3, 2009 - On February 7, Life Rolls On Foundation will trade surfboards for monoskis as the organization hosts its first They Will Ski Again event in Mammoth Lakes, California. With varying degrees of mobility, individuals with spinal cord injury will be treated to an exciting day on the slopes with expert instruction provided by Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra.

“LRO utilizes action sports as a platform for showing what is possible despite spinal cord injury,” said Kris Nakamura, Executive Director and CEO for Life Rolls On Foundation.  “While we intended to pursue adaptive snowboarding, we learned the first step would be to teach beginners to ski, so we’re excited to help people get started.”

Life Rolls On is best-known for its award-winning adaptive surfing program, They Will Surf Again, through which paraplegics and quadriplegics experience the joy of catching a wave with the assistance of adaptive equipment and able-bodied volunteers.  Similar to They Will Surf Again, this program empowers individuals with SCI to participate in a sport they enjoyed prior to injury and serves as an opportunity to introduce others to the sport for the first time.

Among the expert ski instructors will be LRO Ambassador Jeremy McGhee, a Mammoth Lakes resident who has taught adaptive skiing for more than five years.   “We’re excited to host Life Rolls On for their first ski trip,” said Christine Souza, Associate Director of Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra.  “Mammoth Mountain is the great equalizer for people with disabilities.  LRO participants can shred just as hard as any other skier with the right equipment and instruction. We know this will be the first of many great weekends together!”

Expenses for this trip were underwritten during LRO’s “Night by the Ocean presented by Disaboom” gala fundraiser in October, where nine-time world champion surfer Kelly Slater graciously raised his hand during the organization’s donation appeal to sponsor this program.   Though this generous gift, Life Rolls On was able to launch this ski program at no-cost to participants.

“I am so excited and am counting the days,” said participant Kirby Velasco.  “This will be my very first trip to the snow!”
