Roy Turner Takes the Reins at Surf Expo

Dmg world media announced today that Roy Turner will head the Surf Expo team following the resignation of senior vice president Lori Kisner. Prior to joining Surf Expo in 2007 and becoming Surf Expo Show Director in January 2008, Turner was founder and president of the Board Retailers Association (BRA), had his own boardshop for more than 25 years and was named as one of the industry’s most influential people by Transworld Business magazine. Kisner is leaving to pursue an opportunity in the Atlanta area.

“In the past 30 years, as a retailer and then a member of the BRA, I guess I’ve been to 45 Surf Expos,” said Turner. “Over those years, I watched – and benefitted – as Surf Expo grew to be the boardsports and beach lifestyle industries’ number one show. It’s a little daunting to come in behind Lori,” he added, “but I am excited to be a part of the team as we continue to find ways to build a better show.”

“The decision to leave dmg world media, and Surf Expo after more than 20 incredible years was difficult, especially considering the show’s success and position to our industries,” commented Kisner. “And I will miss that unique energy and enthusiasm, and all the great people for which the show is known.”

Kisner credits much of her success at Surf Expo to the strong relationships she developed with manufacturers and retailers from the tight boardsports communities as well as the show’s unique positioning to meet the needs of the east coast market. “Growing up in the Midwest, I never imagined that one day I’d be friends and colleagues with the leaders of the surf, skate and beach-lifestyle industries. I am not sure I’d even seen a surfboard before my first show,” she said, laughing. “Strong relationships with the clients – partnerships really – is the key to the show’s success, and I know that Roy and the rest of the team in place at Surf Expo is going to continue building those relationships.

“Lori has been a true leader in the board sports industry,” said Alan Steel, executive vice president of dmg world media’s Business to Retailer division. “We are going to miss her passion and wish her much success at her new position.”
