Malakye.com’s ShmoozaPalooza at SIA Snow Show in Denver a Big Success

Event Recap and Photos

The first snow sports specific job fair, aka the “ShmoozaPalooza,” took place at the SnowSports Industries America (SIA) Snow Show in Denver, Colorado, on Saturday, January 29, 2010.

With the economic recovery under way, employment picking up, and the first year of SIA’s Snow Show in Denver, introducing the ShmoozaPalooza to the snow sports industry proved to be well timed.  Fourteen employers from various segments of the snow sports industry, hundreds of eager and qualified candidates, as well as some business networkers packed the Korbell ballroom on Saturday.

From Southern California, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest, Northeast and Midwest, people on the hunt for job opportunities came from far and wide.  Overall, employers participating in the Shmooz were very happy with the quality of people who attended.

Gregg Garcia, of Vans’ corporate human resources department, hired four people from the Shmooz for various retail operations.  “I dig the Shmooz!” said Gregg.  “Candidates were great and well prepared...always get a least one hire from the events."

Origin Design + Communications, out of Whistler BC and Montreal QC, found it challenging to hire people for their senior level full-time positions because of the challenges associated with hiring a U.S. citizen to work in Canada.  However, Origin and a few candidates will not walk away empty handed because the company was able to identify a few people to work on regional marketing promotions for its clients in the U.S.  One being a copywriting professional to work freelance, and possibly one person who will be lucky enough to leap the border into a great full-time position in Origin’s Whistler, BC., office.

686, an innovative leader in the snowboard outerwear market, had very positive reviews of the event and has indentified possible contacts for freelance marketing and design projects.

The iconic sunscreen brand Zinka found several connections for open sales territories throughout the U.S.

Volcom’s “The Peoples’ Department” team made the trip all the way out from Southern California for no reason other than the Shmooz and walked away very pleased.  Volcom connected with people who are strong contenders for its graphics and e-commerce departments. “The Shmooz introduced us to a great group of potential future employees and put many faces to names of candidates who had been in touch for some time,” said HR Manager Amber Costello.  “We are excited about the prospect of welcoming some of these applicants as new hires to our Family!”

SIA’s management was also very pleased with the results of the Shmooz.  The stage is now set for many more bigger and better ShmoozaPalooza events at future SIA Snow Shows to come.
