The Westsiders Wins Outstanding Achievement in Action Sports Filmmaking in Newport Beach
On Friday, the Newport Beach Film Festival announced that The Westsiders was the recipient of the award for Outstanding Achievement in Action Sports Filmmaking.
The Westsiders world premiere at The Newport Beach Film Festival was a huge success! Our Saturday, April 24th screening had a sold out theater and included a Q&A session after the film with Shawn “Barney” Barron, Darryl “Flea Virostko, Vince “The Godfather” Collier, and Director Joshua Pomer and was moderated by Matt Skenazy of Surfing Magazine.
The Westsiders is scheduled to premiere at the Santa Cruz Film Festival this Saturday, where the film is in consideration for the award of Best Documentary. The premiere will take place on May 8th at 6:30 PM at the Regal Riverfront Stadium Twin. A second screening will occur on Monday May 10th at 11:30 AM at the same theater. Tickets for both shows can be purchased at http://scfilmfest.org/program/westsiders.
From surfing innovations to gritty localism, follow the rise and fall of The Westsiders surf tribe through the eyes of three best friends from the original 'Surf City': Santa Cruz, California. Best friends Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins bonded by common tragedy and their love of surfing. They live through shattered homes, drug addiction, other psychological issues and hard-core localism to achieve their dream of becoming professional surfers before the age of 24. To surf the notorious Steamer Lane, they had to join 'The Westsiders' Surf Tribe and go face to face with Vince Collier, aka “The Godfather of The Westside”. Vince, a massive brute force, ran Steamer Lane with his own version of street justice. This film explores The Westsiders as the latest chapter in the fascinating history of Santa Cruz, California. Narrated by Rosanna Arquette directed by Joshua Pomer.
