Date: Thursday, June 21, 2012
Time: 9 AM – 11:30 AM
Venue: Skateistan Park on the Afghan Olympic grounds, behind Ghazi stadium,
For one afternoon, the same streets that are usually filled with military convoys, UN vehicles, donkey carts and motorbikes will once again be taken over by dozens of girls and boys on skateboards.
On June 21, the Skateistan Afghan Skate School is organizing our 4th annual 'Go Skateboarding Day' Kabul, the only event of its kind in Afghanistan. At 9AM the kids of Skateistan will take to the streets, doing a loop from the Skateistan park around the Afghan National Olympic Committee grounds. Young participants will celebrate the day by wearing traditional clothing as they represent the Afghan skate scene to the world: shalwar camises for boys and brightly colored celebration clothes for the girls.
The Afghan skate scene will be represented by the boys and girls of Skateistan, as well as Skateistan’s volunteers and staff members. Last year nearly 200 kids took part, including over 80 girls. Participants will end up at the Skateistan park, where Skateistan will hold the largest skateboard competition of the year for both girls and boys (10 AM – 11:30 AM).
Representatives of Afghan and international news media outlets are warmly invited to the event, and a post-event summary with print-quality photographs will also be released. Skateistan will be pleased to address any questions or requests through the contact information below.
