B$Z: Powder Chosen as National Magazine Award Finalist
"We're honored to be a finalist in the preeminent awards event for magazines and media," says POWDER Editor John Stifter. "We've looked at these prestigious media titles for inspiration, so to be a finalist in the same breath as The Guardian, Slate, and The Atavist is a testament to POWDER's strength and focus in quality storytelling, especially online."
"The Human Factor," written by David Page, edited and produced by POWDER, and presented by Black Diamond, addresses the psychological factors that led to a number of tragic avalanches last winter. Using expert analysis from the Utah Avalanche Center's Bruce Tremper and engineer and avalanche educator Ian McCammon, Page references an acronym, called F.A.C.E.T.S. (Familiarity, Acceptance, Commitment, Expert Halo, Tracks/Scarcity, Social Proof), to identify a series of six common factors, or heuristic traps (mental shortcuts), that influence decision making in avalanche terrain and often put skiers in danger.
The American Society of Magazine Editors will announce award winners on February 2 at the New York Marriott Marquis.
