B$Z: SportsLock Locks in $5 Million in Series A Funding
June 2, 2015
SportsLock, the first of its kind Fantasy Sports Brackets experience, announced today it has closed a $5 million Series A funding round led by Wicklow Capital. Funds will accelerate SportsLock’s growth and positioning as the best place for friends to take action on sports.
SportsLock, founded by Todd Heyden and Ross Karel, is a fantasy sports app in which users compete against friends or public opponents in “survive and advance” style bracket tournaments for money. Available in NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAAF, NCAAB and soon PGA and NHL formats, players pick a sport, set a dollar amount, and then draft players in real-time, head-to-head against their opponent. The points are tallied uniquely per sport and a winner is determined. Formatted like the NCAA basketball tourney, if it’s a bracket of eight users, four move on to the next round and the process repeats until there is one winner.
In addition to Wicklow, several other participants were involved in the funding round including Robert Dupuy, the former COO of Major League Baseball. Explains Robert: “From my time at MLB and after, I saw a massive number of pitches blending technology and sports. When I saw SportsLock in Chicago at a tech fair, I knew immediately that they had a unique product that would have universal appeal.”
Todd Heyden adds, “Unlike the current daily games being offered in the space, we believe we’ve built a product that appeals to all sports fans from casual to die-hard. This round of funding is going to help attract an initial community of players looking for something new and fresh and ultimately assist in keeping social circles connected through sports– we’re excited to pick up the pace and get things moving!”
