B$Z: 2015 ESPY Nominations Announced - Nitro Circus' Josh Sheehan Nominated for Two Categories

June 26, 2015

This week, ESPN announced the nominees for the 2015 ESPYS Presented by Capital One.  Nitro Circus’s Josh Sheehan, who earlier this year landed the world’s first triple backflip on a motorbike, is included in the Best Male Action Sports Athlete and Best Play categories. Best Male Action Sports Athlete honors the rider who made the biggest impact in extreme sports over the past year, and features the finest in motocross, freestyle motocross, skate and snowmobile. In Best Play, Sheehan’s landmark triple backflip will square off against Malcolm Butler, whose game-changing interception sealed victory in Super Bowl XLIX for the New England Patriots. Other big names in the tournament-style brackets include NBA champion Stephen Curry, soccer icon Lionel Messi and more.

Josh Sheehan said, “This is a huge honor. To be mentioned with some of the biggest names in sport is incredible.  It also shows the importance of going after something you believe in, no matter how many people tell you it can’t be done.  While there is definitely risk, this is a tremendous reward.”

Fans will have the chance to select the ESPY award winners by voting online or via mobile at ESPN.com/ESPYS.  Voting is underway now – all categories will close when the live broadcast starts at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday July 15.  Fans can also follow the ESPYS on Twitter @ESPYS.

The 2015 ESPYS Presented by Capital One will be hosted by comedian, actor and television host Joel McHale, most widely known for hosting The Soup on E! as well as playing Jeff Winger on Community. The ESPYS will be broadcast live on ABC Wednesday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The ESPYS gather top celebrities from sports and entertainment to commemorate the past year in sports by recognizing major sports achievements, reliving unforgettable moments and saluting the leading performers and performances. The ESPYS honor ESPN’s commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a partnership launched with the late Jim Valvano at the inaugural ESPYS in 1993.  Follow The 2015 ESPYS on Twitter @ESPYS.

In April, Sheehan rocked the action sports world when he became the first person to ever land a triple backflip on a motorbike.  The landmark world’s first, previously considered impossible, raised the bar for the entire sport, and drew global media coverage.
