Partnering with Rusty Del Mar, I started an annual surf contest with the goal of creating a fun, energetic event to kick off the summer in Del Mar. In response to the dwindling number of local events, we created a fun contest that focuses more on the family aspect of surfing and giving newcomers a chance to compete in a non-intimidating environment. We saw tremendous growth from 2013 to 2014 not only in the number of contestants but also in the level of surfing. As we continue to grow the event, we hope to eventually be the official start to summer in Del Mar, with live art, music and vendors to accompany the already epic surfing.
