Fond memories of 50% click rates, the internet before interstitials and San Francisco when every startups default valuation was $100MM. Pets.com spent even more before realizing shipping pet food cost more than the pet food itself. Its a different story now although its taken a long time to get here, as the Chinese idiom goes, the dragon takes 100 years to wake up and 100 years to go to sleep. Some thoughts after 15+ years in working in the digital space: Make a genuine effort to collaborate with your clients other agency partners. If you don't find immediate reciprocation keep putting your hand out. A media strategy should be designed to bring the creative idea to life and not focus solely on cost efficiency. "Building awareness and driving traffic to the website" is getting a little tired. Have you seen a purchase funnel lately? Well, its not a funnel anymore, or an inverted triangle either. Its a mess of connections headed every which way. Other than keys and a wallet, the only other item we have with us at all times, especially at the shopping mall, is our mobile phone. If its a smart phone it has the processing power and functionality of a 2011 PC. It also has a smaller screen than a PC so think mobile first and create content that leverages the platforms strength's not weaknesses. Clicks and click rates are a vastly overrated metric and their continued currency obscures the need to focus on interaction and conversion when measuring success. Millennials are not looking to serve an apprenticeship or 'put in their time' to get ahead. They want to progress quickly and be entrusted with responsibility that matches their performance.
