I went to FIDM and started as a Sample Coordinator for a Manufacturing company in LA called My Dyer. My accounts included skate and surf and lifestyle companies: Billabong, RCVA, Obey, Roxy, Quiksilver, Hurley and Lucky Brand.
I had a brief internship with Roxy's Research and Development team where got to work with Cads and help prep for meetings and fittings. Was also responsible for all samples being organized and ready for meetings.
I moved to New York a few years later and was an Assistant Designer for a Juniors knit and woven company called At Last Inc. who did mostly mid tier. My accounts were Macys, Jcpenny, and Kohls. Although not the client I wanted to design for, this experience was crucial to my understanding of sample development with factories overseas. I also was exposed to sourcing overseas for the first time. Heavy spec and tech pack work daily and on average had 40-50 samples developed overseas per month.
After New York I knew I wanted to go back to Skate/ Surf, I am from Palos Verdes and missed the beach lifestyle. I also find my personal style to mix the Skate and Surf lifestyle with runway trends/ fast fashion. I don't consider myself too girly and my bosses have all described me as a laid back Rock and Roll style. I don't own a pair of jeans that are not ripped/ worn, have at least 10 new white tees I add to my wardrobe each month and I love my Vans and all flip flops.
I spent the last 5 years with another Private Label Juniors Licensed Product knit company in Los Angeles called Mighty Fine. I started as an Assistant Designer and worked up to Designer for Specialty Accounts. I work less with mid tier and more with licensed product mainly tees and woven and denim. Accounts here include: Topshop, Nordstrom, Madewell, Pac Sun, Tillys, Zumiez, Urban outfitters and Forever 21. Specialty accounts include Blizzard and Valve.
I hope to finally get back to where I know my strength is and where my heart is: at the beach.
