Associate Director of Program

Proven leader with a history of high achievement in the outdoor recreation and sport industry. Skilled in Leadership, Human Resources, Organizational Development, Sales, Marketing, Public Speaking, Program Development, and Customer Service. Strong operations professional with a Bachelor of Arts in Outdoor Leadership & Resort Management and a minor in Business Administration from Western State Colorado University.

Provided executive leadership to 480 employees split over eight departments. Coordinated department training schedules, conducted performance assessments, provided staff with timely feedback and constructive resolution to interpersonal issues, and analyzed customer feedback.

Represented Philmont at events such as Outdoor Retailer and American Camp Association conferences. Creator and manager of nationwide sales and marketing program, PASS & PAW. Collaborated with retail team in purchasing, marketing, and sales of goods. 

Facilitated programming for over 22,000 youth and adults each summer at largest youth camp in the world. Responsible for logistics and transportation of goods and risk management of outdoor programs.

Oversaw $4.6 million annual budget. 

Led the operation of running 1,300 employees through entire HR employee lifecycle annually. 2017 season had most applications, fastest hiring season, and fewest terminations ever recorded. 


Built a department of outdoor recreation professionals. Oversaw 313 wilderness backpacking guides (Rangers) through five levels of management. Responsible for outdoor education program development and the overall customer experience on 12-day backpacking treks in New Mexico’s Rocky Mountains. Revised Ranger Fieldbook to enhance level of skills instruction with emphasis on experiential education and pedagogy.

Created the Philmont Advisor Skills School (PASS) and Philmont Advisor Workshop (PAW) programs and grew PASS and PAW program participation by 40% over three years. Brought the world-class Philmont experience to over 1,100 new customers while travelling over 27,000 miles by car during the six month program. Marketed through social media, direct emails, and printed publications to grow the brand nationally. 

Chief Ranger

Hired, trained, supervised, motivated, mentored, and evaluated 25 winter camping guides. Trained staff in appropriate risk management in remote sub-zero wilderness environment and served as on-call manager and emergency medical response when customers were on base.

Facilitated dogsledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and winter camping for 3,500 youth and adults.

Winter Program Director 

Oversaw 60 Rangers and their facilitation of outdoor education and wilderness risk management. Provided day-to-day coaching, advice, and guidance to frontline guide staff. Assisted Chief Ranger in development of wilderness backpacking policies and procedures. 

Resolved staff-to-staff and staff-to-customer issues by genuinely listening to both sides and helping to find win-win solutions for all parties without sacrificing policies and procedures.	

Associate Chief Ranger

Led backpacking and winter camping expeditions up to 10 days in length. Taught advanced wilderness travel, camping, and outdoor ethics to customers in remote, harsh environments. Worked in retail operations for apparel, footwear, and outdoor backpacking gear. Assisted in inventory, merchandising, and ordering operations.

Autumn / Winter Guide

Facilitated overnight dogsled adventures in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. Taught customers how to camp, travel, and thrive in snow while dogsledding and winter camping.

Caretaker of 42-dog Alaskan husky workforce - learning every dog by name and their traits and attributes. Served as emergency medical response for both customers and dogs alike. Extensive use of risk management practices to make the experience transformative and memorable, yet safe.

Musher

Oversaw the day-to-day operations and management of the 7-day Mountain Trek Program. Trained staff, created program manual, developed work schedule, and coordinated field support.

Mountain Trek Program Manager

Trained, supervised, and coached eight Rangers in their outdoor educator roles. Provided field support and mentorship for staff, most of whom were in their first job and first extended period of time away from home.

Ranger Trainer

Led groups of 7-12 customers for the first three days of their 12-day backpacking expeditions. Taught advanced wilderness skills, backpacking, first aid, and outdoor ethics.  

Planned and led a 20-day trek of eight youth over 180 miles with a focus on personal growth and wilderness skills while instilling an awareness in the youth of what they were capable of accomplishing hard to achieve goals. Coordinated all itinerary planning, logistics, risk mitigation, programming, and safety functions for trek.
