• Developed a pre-season inventory, sales and margin objective by building a three-year strategic merchandise plan for chain, events and ecommerce. Collaborated with CEO and CFO to reconcile merchandise plans with financial plans.
• Managed in-season merchandise plans to exceed financial goals. Communicated both opportunities and jeopardies to the leadership and buying organization.
• Built Open-To-Buy tool to quantify and monitor daily sales, margin and inventory by merchandise category. The OTB tool also helped reforecast sales and provided guidance to buyers to determine any adjustments in future On Order needed to achieve receipt and inventory targets.
• Met with software vendor (Epicor) weekly to help Boot Barn fully utilize support tools. Challenged the processes, calculations and timelines for updates.
• Introduced the concept of in-stock calculations and the ability to monitor the store in-stock positions of the top volume drivers for the company.
• Drove the store level planning and analysis. Developed store sales and receipt plans to get in front of the business and reduce jeopardy especially in seasonal zones.
• Identified aged merchandise and slow selling styles or vendors to maximize profitability. Implemented a markdown cadence to better stimulate turn.
• Wrote a vendor partnership guide (vendor compliance) to help move the company toward clearly communicated Standard Operating Procedures such as notice on vendor cost/retail changes vs. making them on the fly. Continued to use this evolving document to communicate clearly of what was expected from our vendor partners.
• Managed four Merchandise Planners, eight Corporate Inventory Control Specialists and two Electronic Data Interchange analysts.
• Boot Barn is a $400M, 160+ store specialty retail chain across the US. The primary focus is work and western boots and apparel.

Director of Merchandise Planning

• Collaborated with President and GMM to develop annual merchandise plans by season, month and class. Follow through with the development and training of the merchant organization on receipt flow to promote inventory responsibility and timely assortment purchases and allocations.
• Achieved merchandise success by exceeding LY comparative store sales and increasing inventory turn along with gross margin gain. Same store sales in 2007 were up 8% and Spring 2008 was up 2%. The improvement in the 2007 inventory turn was 8.5% and the Spring 2008 improved by 4%.
• Created investment strategies on replenishable categories to maximize profitability. Reviewed assortment mix, classification turn and lost sales (extremely fast turns or out of stock) by region and store with allocators and buyers. Recommended pricing strategy to drive volume and margin.
• Oversaw and directed company strategies, by merchandise category, to maintain an effective mix of both regular and markdown items to meet the company's earnings goals. Identified slow turning or aged goods in the chain and store level; worked with merchants on style levels, allocators on assortment mix and store operations on store levels to help move merchandise.
• Automated aging allocation system to help move direct reports from a clerical level to analytically driven. Increased efficiency of workforce by building macros for distribution and encouraging Excel skills to identify store/regional differences (such as black tees don't sell quickly in Florida).
• Maintained open communication with store operations and divisional managers to identify special store nuances and needs.
• Prioritized time with planning and allocation staff to review weekly item flows and store needs. Made changes to both the merchandise plans and the weekly flows as needed based on store needs.
