My role as the Footwear Designer for FGL Sports has allowed extensive collaboration with Design Directors and Product Line Managers on projects ranging from soccer cleats to snow boots designed to withstand the rigors of Alberta’s oil patch. I am often tasked with assisting category vision in addition to long term strategy for the vast array of products that we carry. My day to day activities include the execution of assigned collections and projects within both seasonal and long-term developmental timelines. I effectively mentor and support Contract Designers and Product Developers by sharing the skills, knowledge and experience I have built over many years of executing high quality footwear. My design process includes creating sketches, patterns, mock ups, 3D models and prototypes to prove new concepts. Seasonal colour stories and trend direction are presented to the various design/buying teams, ensuring that they have a thorough understanding of tie-ins to soft goods, molded/tooled parts, and manufacturing processes. Once potential styles have been vetted by the buying team and VPs, I provide meticulously detailed product technical packages to the Product Development team. This includes spec drawings, patterns, fit, 3D models, sample revision, construction processes, material selection and testing. Once testing is complete, I present my work at internal reviews and seasonal buyer’s meetings.
