If there’s one thing that defines me, it’s curiosity. Curiosity about the people I meet, about the places I visit, about the rhythms and insights of the human and natural ecosystems we inhabit.

My curiosity about the world blossomed on a student trip to Europe at age 13, where I spent an entire day wandering around Paris—all alone—searching for Jim Morrison’s grave. My love of offbeat, off-peak travel began two years later on a trip up the East Coast with my dad, where we slept in his van, avoided cities, rode mountain bikes, and spent hours talking under the stars before bed.

Since then I’ve hiked to the summit of Mt. Whitney; floated down the Grand Canyon in a wooden dory; kayaked in sea caves; bungee jumped off a 700-ft bridge in South Africa; won a homebrewing contest at the county fair; spent 10 days at a silent meditation retreat; lived in seven states; ridden motorcycles in 22 countries on five continents; and explored dozens of national parks and UNESCO sites.

After completing my PhD at Penn and working at a big market research firm, I moved to New Orleans simply because it seemed like an interesting place to live, and started my own market research company. After Hurricane Katrina, I escaped to L.A. for a postdoctoral fellowship and to teach classes at USC.

Curiosity turned my passion into a job. In 2008 I joined Rider magazine as Road Test Editor and got paid to do what I love: travel around the world, ride motorcycles, experience new places, and write inspirational stories. I’ve been Senior Editor since 2016. We’re a small team, so I wear many hats.

There’s another thing that defines me: conscientiousness. My mother, a self-proclaimed “steel magnolia” from Georgia, taught me to have manners and show respect, to stand up straight and look someone in the eyes when I talk to them. That integrity and honoring commitments are inviolable. That there’s value in doing hard things.

Launched Rider's online touring and travel magazine (Favorite Rides & Destinations) in the spring of 2016, and I have served as Editor for two issues per year. Responsibilities include selecting and editing content and photos, writing features and other content (editor's letter, cover lines, captions, product reviews, etc.), managing layouts/production/deployment, promoting each issue with website posts, eblasts, and social media posts. 

Valmont Research provides market research for the healthcare, dental, real estate, and other industries, specializing in survey research, demographic analysis, and custom GIS mapping.

As founder, owner and project director of Valmont Research, I'm responsible for business development, client relations, proposal writing, research design, project management, data analysis, and report preparation. Our firm has developed long-term relationships with clients in various industries, as well as partnerships with consultants and vendors.

Owner/Project Director

Rider Magazine is the largest monthly motorcycle magazine in the U.S. with a circulation of >135,000. In addition to the print magazine our brand distributes content with a website, biweekly e-newsletter, biannual online magazine, YouTube channel, and social media channels.

On any given day, I'm riding, writing, editing, proofreading, planning, shooting/editing photos and video, modeling for motorcycle road tests, managing our website and social media channels, sitting in an airport or on an airplane, attending industry events, or camping off the back of a motorcycle. At the end of the month, I hit the reset button and do it all over again!

Responsibilities: Write motorcycle tests, product reviews, travel stories and other content for Rider's website and print magazine. Manage the brand's website, social media channels, YouTube channel and e-newsletter, including SEO efforts and Google Analytics tracking of traffic and other KPIs. Served as project manager on two full website redesigns. Brand representation at product launches and industry events, shooting/editing photos and video, public speaking, and taking out the trash.

Senior Editor

Same responsibilities as Senior Editor (2016-present), with the addition of launching and being Editor of Favorite Rides & Destinations.

Road Test Editor

As an National Institute of Aging Postdoctoral Fellow in the USC/UCLA Center on Biodemography & Population Health at the Andrus Gerontology Center, I collaborated with Dr. Eileen Crimmins and Dr. Caleb Finch on a study of sex differences in infant mortality. The results of our research were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2008.

During my time at USC, I was an instructor at the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, where I taught two semesters of an undergraduate course on the sociology and demography of aging.

Postdoctoral Fellow/Instructor

National Analysts Worldwide is a leading strategic research consultancy that integrates sophisticated market research methods with specialized industry expertise to guide important business decisions for its clients, many of which are Fortune 500 companies.

As Associate Project Manager, I managed research projects for clients in transportation, telecommunications, and information technology, with involvement in every step of the process, from proposal writing and budgeting to research design, questionnaire and discussion guide development, field operations (online surveys, mail surveys, telephone interviews), data analysis, and report writing.
