Dr. Calvin Hirsch served in the National Health Service Corps for two years in the Tenderloin of San Francisco, a neighborhood in the center of downtown San Francisco, from 1983 to 1985. He was largely in charge of seeing low-income elderly who lived alone for the most part. He felt a strong sense of responsibility for ensuring that these patients received the medical treatment they need, knowing that many of them lacked family members who could assist them or transport them to their appointments.
